Inaugural Salon Group Exhibition
September 7 - September 30, 2023
52 Greene St Floor 3, New York, NY
Salon 21 is pleased to inaugurate its new space at 52 Greene Street with a salon-style group exhibition, opening to the public on September 7, 2023 by appointment. Curated by founder Alex Bass, the exhibition is a celebration of the creativity of emerging talent from across North America and the United Kingdom. The artists selected for participation in the group show take cues from art history at large, working in a variety of mediums ranging from oil paint to ceramics.
With a BA in Art History from Columbia University, Bass’s curatorial approach to Salon 21’s first exhibition is inspired by her historical appreciation of artistic movements, and takes a look back at the Académie de peinture et sculpture’s salons from the 17th - 20th century. The recognized categories for art at the academic salons were limited by a hierarchy of genres. The order of importance was as follows: History Painting; Portraiture; Genre Painting; Landscapes; Still Life. This method of ranking artwork was established during the Italian Renaissance by the great European Academies.
