About the Exhibition

“Agony in the Garden” is a title taken from an episode of the life of Christ. On the night before the crucifixion, after the last supper as his disciples sleep in an orchard, Christ prays to god in a desperate plea to spare him from his fate on the cross. But after being consoled by an angel, he ultimately accepts his betrayal and sacrifice. In “Agony in the Garden,” Armitano Domingo examines self-appointed suffering in both the secular and sacred worlds, and the virtuous aura that surrounds it.

About the Artist

Marc Armitano Domingo is a New York based multidisciplinary artist. His work deals with globalization and questions the boundaries between art and craft. From a young age, he studied historical performance practices of the Viola da gamba, and applied historical techniques and conventions to his works in oil paint and porcelain. Research is an important step in Armitano Domingo’s artistic process, consulting historical treatises, museum archives, and examination of original works. Alongside secular work, Armitano Domingo paints sacred images, an art form that can be plainly enjoyed for its beauty, and venerated in the eyes of the faithful. Sacred painting allows artists to create mystical and supernatural environments, a process that involves dramatic gradients of light and other special effects to create a sense of awe, wonder, and meditation.
